Mesh Networks in Roanoke VA¶
Welcome¶
Mesh networks like MeshCore and Meshtastic allow radios to pass messages from one node to another, creating a decentralized communications network that operates independently of cellular service or the internet. As more people participate, the network becomes stronger, covers a larger area, and provides more reliable communication.
A local mesh network benefits the entire community by supporting emergency preparedness, enabling off-grid communication during outages, encouraging exploration of the region's terrain and radio propagation, and bringing together neighbors who share an interest in technology, public service, and community resilience. Every new node expands the network and helps connect more people across the Roanoke Valley.
Meshcore in our Area¶
Meshcore is growing in our area, some repeaters have been reported:

- Bent Mountain
- Tinker Mountain
- Leesburg
NOTE: Since the Poor Mountain repeater was installed, our meshcore network has a merged with the larger regional network in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
